Unveiled in 1963, the 1600 Giulia Sprint GT was Alfa Romeo’s direct response to the recently debuted Porsche 911. Penned by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro during his tenure at Bertone, the angular 2+2 coupe is an immediately recognizable icon of the golden age of Italian motoring. As a first-year model, it features the highly desirable scalino engine lid which sits slightly above the nose, a hallmark of the coveted early production cars. Under this hood lies Alfa Romeo’s famed 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine which was heavily influenced by Alfa’s successful career in motor racing and included Weber carbs and dual overhead cams, rare features for road cars of the era. This allowed for a factory output of 105 hp in a car that weighed less than 1000 kilos and maintained a near 50/50 weight balance for exceptional handling. Paired with a 5 speed syncromesh transmission, independent front suspension, live rear axle, and an exhaust that sings an Italian operetta, the 1600 Giulia Sprint GT provides an exhilarating analog driving experience that is just as enjoyable today as it was more than sixty years ago.
The example we have here, in the uncommon and original combination of racing red over blue interior, has been under the care of just three enthusiast owners during its lifetime. The original owner kept the car for nearly 50 years, during which he lovingly doted upon it, maintaining and showing it regularly. Under the stewardship of the second owner, a noted collector of Italian classics, the car received a complete, body-off restoration in 2010. It was sold to its third and current owner, a fellow collector, in 2022. He has continued to maintain the car with an open-checkbook policy, including a recent major service in preparation for its sale. Included with the car are numerous service records and documents, as well as photographs of the restoration.
This 1963 Alfa Romeo 1600 Giulia Sprint GT is a truly turnkey example of one of the most usable vintage sports coupes in existence, and represents a rare opportunity to join the ranks of classic 1960’s Italian motoring at an attractive and attainable price point.
